Total guess here:

VT gas flow was obstructed somehow. Turning on VT rapidly heated up
components of the probe near the hearing element. Disconnecting the VT gas
line somehow eliminated the obstruction, but probe guts were still hot.
Reconnecting the VT gas line restored gas flow and allowed the probe
innards to cool down and return to normal operation.
