Hi Justin,
To take the cap off I usually chill the things in liquid nitrogen—we
seem to have lost our fancy cap removal tool so that’s the easiest
way to get things out. When everything is cold the drive tips usually come
right off.
Regarding temperature ranges, the rotors don’t really care what
temperature you run at as far as I know. The important details are the drive
tips. See the attached Varian solids manual—pages 20-21 have info
about the various drive tips and temperature ranges.

Hello,
Though I feel comfortable with Bruker-style rotors, I have never used Varian-style
Pencil Rotors. I would imagine that there is a lot of expertise on this topic in
this community. It is sort of a remedial question but how do I use the cap removal
tool without damaging the drive tip, top cap, spacers, rotor, etc? I'm hesitant to
clamp down on the drive tip and would appreciate any advice/suggestions for
packing/unpacking pencil rotors.
A related question, what are the temperature ranges for these rotors? Are
there specific materials I should use for low temperature operation?
