Dear AMMRL colleagues,
I'm sad to report that one of our colleagues passed away last Friday,
October 29th. Paul Shin, the Chemical Instrumentation Manager at California
State University, Northridge, died suddenly due to complications related to
chemotherapy for cancer. Paul was diagnosed fairly recently, and died after
complications related to the chemotherapy. Paul was a life-long teacher
of science, including high-school and college/university levels. Paul was
the Instrumentation Facilities Manager at Occidental College, then an
applications engineer and regional sales representative for Bruker, and then
went back into our ranks as the Chemical Instrumentation Manager at Cal.
State, Northridge. Paul was a volunteer with the LAPD Hazardous Materials
division, and was an admirer of those who put themselves on the line and
serve their community (see
http://www.alchemedu.org for more details).
He was much loved by his students, and while he was hospitalized the
"Science Cheerleaders" at the USA Science & Engineering Festival sent him a
personal video "get well" message (

rleaders ). I enjoyed time with Paul during his years with Bruker, and he
gave me my first appreciation for good Sushi (yes, in Boulder, Colorado).
I'm sure Paul's passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of not only his
family and friends, but also for the people he served (especially the
students) at Cal. State Northridge.
I just thought that some of you who knew Paul might want to know.
Sincerely,
-Rich Shoemaker
