Hello

We have an open position for a post-doc in the Chemistry Department's NRM
Lab at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The position involves
skill development in applications, instrumentation and management. Lab Details
are below. Happy to answer any questions!

Please pass along to interested students.

Thanks
Marc

Magnetic Resonance Post-doctoral scholars in the NMR Core Laboratory

Position Summary:
The Magnetic Resonance Post-Doctoral Scholar in the NMR Core laboratory at
UNC Department of Chemistry plays a key role in implementing and expanding
the use of NMR and EPR spectroscopy in the Core. This individual will
collaborate with faculty, post-docs and students in magnetic resonance as
well as train users and assist with the maintenance of instrumentation.
The position is designed to expand technical expertise in magnetic resonance
while developing managerial skills.

The research role (50%) includes a heavy emphasis on developing standard and
advanced operating procedures in NMR and/or EPR spectroscopy and sharing
capabilities with students and researchers. Training, seminars and advanced
training workshops are expected along with simulations and direct consultation
and collaboration with research groups. Applications include variable
temperature, time resolved experiments and the monitoring of light induced
chemistry. Additional applications are possible along with seeking funding
for new equipment.

The laboratory management role (50%) involves working with the laboratory team
to maintain a readily accessible and reliable collection of instrumentation
for the acquisition of EPR and NMR data. This includes coordinating with core
staff to support high throughput runs using the sample changers on NMR spectrometers,
general maintenance of EPR and NMR spectrometers and associated magnets, diagnosing
instrument issues and assisting and training users in both EPR and NMR spectroscopy.
Additional experience in managing a major magnetic resonance laboratory is possible,
consistent with abilities.

Principal Functions:

  1. Research (50% effort): promote the use of NMR and/or EPR spectroscopy
including but not limited to variable temperature and time resolved experiments
through hardware, software and procedure development. The individual will work
with students to adapt NMR and/or EPR to their research needs and collaborate
with researchers.

  1. Laboratory Management (50% effort) : work with the staff in the core
to support EPR and NMR applications. Instrument maintenance including: cryogen
fills, sample changers, NMR probes and EPR resonators. Software support for
EPR simulations and NMR spectroscopy. Supporting helium recovery, training,
and general lab support are expected.

Qualification & Experience Requirements:
The Magnetic Resonance Post-Doctoral Scholar will have the following essential
competencies.

  * experience with NMR and/or EPR instrumentation and spectroscopy via hands-on
experimentation and calculation and simulation spectra.

  * Familiarity with super conducting magnets. Knowledge of cryogen fills is a plus.
  * Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of independence, to design and
troubleshoot new experiments, to solve experimental problems independently, and to be
able to relate work to the larger big-picture laboratory context.
  * Ability to interact constructively with undergraduate students, graduate students,
post-docs, faculty and technical and non-technical staff.

My work day may differ from your work day. Please do not feel obligated to
respond outside your working hours.
