The NMR Facility in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is a shared instrumentation facility providing analytical support for research and teaching in the department and throughout the University of Arizona campus. Facility staff includes two Ph.D. level scientists and two half-time graduate student Research Assistants. We operate five superconducting Fourier-transform NMR instruments: Varian Unity-300, Bruker AVIII-400, Bruker DRX-500, Bruker DRX-600 and Varian Inova-600 with cryogenic probe. A Varian Mercury-400 is soon to be installed. All instruments are operated hands-on by a large and diverse group of users.
We function as a team with the goal of educating all members in every aspect of managing a facility and solving chemical and biological problems by NMR. People with a strong background in NMR, especially solution state, and a strong desire to learn and expand their skills are encouraged to apply.
Duties and Responsibilities: Most of these are not exclusive to the Assistant; they are shared among all of the facility staff to varying degrees.
* NMR maintenance and repair, including cryogen fills
* Methods development and pulse sequence implementation for a diverse base of users
* Assist users and train new users
* Sample service: for large undergraduate classes using Bruker SampleJet autosampler, as well as advanced experiments for researchers
* Teaching: Demonstration of NMR (1/2 hour) for many organic lab sections, guest lectures in chemistry courses, assist with NMR aspects of senior level undergraduate and first year graduate courses.
* New instrument acquisition and upgrades of existing equipment

* Excellent teaching and verbal communication skills
* Experience with repair and maintenance of electronics equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
* Extensive knowledge of small-molecule NMR structure
determination methods and data interpretation
* Knowledge of electronics test equipment and digital and radio frequency circuits
* Teaching experience in Chemistry or Biochemistry
* Experience with cryogenic probe systems and vacuum systems
* Knowledge of solid-state NMR techniques
