Hi!
This is a survey of sorts. The data will be used in justifying a 5-year
financial plan that is required by our funding agency. This is needed
because after the five years, we are expected to support ourselves from
the income we generate through client samples.
In addition to the cryogens, are trying to estimate typical operation and
maintenance costs for spectrometers after the warranty period expires.
Our 400 MHz NMR (JEOL Lambda with Magnex long-hold supercon) is already 5
years old. The only major breakdown was a mysterious "slow quench"
recently but so far the computer and console have not required any major
repair or upgrade yet.
I have decided to break down the costs according to the ff. NMR
components:
1. Magnet
2. Console (RF & electronics)
3. Computer/workstation
So for each question, please answer for each of the three components
above. I would like to know the following:
A. Typical serviceable life of the above NMR components.
B. The mean time between failures of 1, 2 and 3.
C. The typical cost of repair, maintenance and upgrade of 1,2 or 3 over a
year (or other useful time period), not including cryogens and auxillary
components like air compressors (I already have figures for those).
I guess this applies to those with conventional supercon (300-500 MHz, not
actively cooled).
