Many thanks to all that replied to my request for a parts source
for my SGI O2. The name that seemed to keep coming up
was Minicomputer Exchange in Sunnyvale CA ( http://www.mce.com )
They were very fast to respond to my request, and seem knowledgeable and
friendly as well! Their price for a re-furbished system board is 650 $US
compared to
the quote of 3000 $US that I got from a very surly SGI rep after 30 min. of: "if
you
have a service contract press 1, If you would like to purchase a service
contract press 2....".

Some suggested that we replace the O2 with a PC based system. I guess we will
eventually do that, but for now I think that we will stick with the "devil you
know" rather
than "the devil that you don't" The O2 with XwinNMR and ICONNMR have been
extremely stable to this point, and I would hate to abandon a computer that is
less than
two years old. If we do switch, I would really like to keep the SGI 1600 SW
flat panel monitor. I think that there are PC boards that will drive this
monitor.
Anyone have any comments on this?

However, with SGI's future so uncertain, I can fully understand Bruker's
decision to
move entirely to PC based systems. The problem that I had with the O2 could
have been fixed
with $50 and a 10 min walk to the local computer store with a PC based system.
