Without intending to derail the discussion too much…does anyone know (or
would admit to knowing) which lucky person’s birthday that is?

We're 100% fine with sharing the BSMS service login. The username must be
at least 3 characters but it doesn't matter what you use. I've started telling
people to just use nmrsu because it saves me having to type the above...
password is 1964
And with the samplecase, I believe if you change the lift parameters you have
to reset the sample changer to apply them. If it actually does anything.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Justin,
I have seen the same thing as you but with a standard length J-Young tube and
manual sample insertion. I agree with Clemens that altering the lift tuning
may be helpful. You may also want to check the hold sample airflow value in
the lift control section. You can get to these parameters by entering ha on
the topspin command line and then clicking on the open button next to lock\shim\vtu.
The main menu will appear, then click on sample handling. On the sample handling
page you can go to lift tuning or lift control. You might compare the lift
tuning and lift control values on the two spectrometers that you mentioned
and see if there are any differences that could explain why one works well
and the other doesn't. If you want to change any of the lift parameters you
will have to be logged in to ha as service. I don't know what the Bruker policy
is about posting the service login name and password so I won't do it here.
Perhaps someone at Bruker could comment.
Best,
Jeff

HI Justin,
yes J-Young or LPV tubes are top heavy. Do you have a Kel-F spinner? those
have a but more mass and might work better.
the other options is lift tuning. I would have to look up the exact how to.
But maybe _at_Groves.Michael can join in.
I would suggest a faster decent and shorter hover time if possible.
Clemens

This email originated outside the University. Check before clicking links or

We're 100% fine with sharing the BSMS service login. The username must be
at least 3 characters but it doesn't matter what you use. I've started telling
people to just use nmrsu because it saves me having to type the above.
.. password is 1964
And with the samplecase, I believe if you change the lift parameters you ha=
ve to reset the sample changer to apply them. If it actually does anything.
Cheers,
Mike

o, J Young tubes are getting stuck on occasion during the loading step in o=
ur walkup Bruker 400 with sample case. I believe the issue is that these to=
p-heavy tubes are bouncing into
a groove in the top of the upper barrel, then wedging themselves diagonall=
y between these grooves and the shuttle of the autosampler. I made a movie =
of the issue and have uploaded with annotations to youtube -

fore giving up. Many times one of these attempts is successful. Sometimes t=
he tube will not load after five times and the systems goes into an error s=
tate, which requires manual intervention
to restart the queue. Even if the sample loads successfully on the 2nd, 3r=
d, etc. try the extra time backs up the queue and seems to irritate the stu=
dents. I would appreciate ideas to test my hypothesis (that tubes are jamme=
d diagonally into between grooves
on the BST and the sample shuttle) and ideas on how to address this issue.=
I can't imagine I am the first or only person to have this issue. A co=
uple of additional comments: These JYoung tubes were "shortened" by=
a glassblower to address the height requirements
of the sample case. Hence, it is at least conceivable that tubes/valves ha=
ve asymmetry. We have a tool to check tube straightness and all of the tube=
s are acceptable. The tool doesn't check the valve, though. Given that =
all tubes will load at least some of
the time AND the amount of money already spent on these J Young tubes, I w=
ould anticipate skepticism (to put it politely) from the faculty if I sugge=
st the issue is with the tubes. In addition, there is another instrument ri=
ght next to this 400 and (to our
knowledge) no JYoung tubes have ever gotten stuck in its sample case! And =
I'll also note that (to our knowledge) no standard 5mm tubes from any v=
endors (Wilmad, Norell, New Era, etc.) has ever gotten stuck in either samp=
le case. One faculty member suggested
trying to rig some sort of "bumper" that fits on top of the shuttl=
e and dampens the oscillations of the JYoung tube (but presumably have no i=
mpact on normal tubes). Having spent the better part of an afternoon perche=
d on a ladder watching tubes go in and out
of the instrument, I think it is conceivable, but it seems like there is a=
lot that could go wrong just above the bore of the magnet, which makes me =
nervous. Thanks, Justin
