AMMRL: New User training - what have people found works (and what doesn't)

Dear All,

Thank you to all for the Ivan meetings.

We’ve had our facility up and running for a while, but one aspect is still unsolved.

        New User Training

Previously we use one-on-one with new users for several hours at a spectrometer with full facility walkthrough, then have a final review (1/2 hour), and last a quiz (minor).

As SARS-CoV-2 is most commonly transmitted by extended and/or short distance personal contact, this of course isn’t an option any more.

Question:
What have all of you found that works effectively for training, and ….what doesn’t work in our present situation?

Note: I’m focusing on effectively not necessarily efficiently as I’m not worried about time/cost, more about getting new users not to break stuff (old spectrometers don’t like rough/impatient treatment)

As one faculty member put it when I told him we couldn’t train people right now: “I understand, I wouldn’t let someone drive my vintage car without training either”

Best wishes,
Ryan
