Assistant Research Scientist

Salary: $43126 to commensurate with experience.

Pay Grade: 5A

Percent Time: 100%

Type of Position: Regular: A position which is considered essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. Persons appointed to this position will receive the privileges and benefits associated with regular employment status.



This position will assist in the operation of a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) research facility. This position will also perform experiments, analyze data and provide service to the science community both within and outside of the Department of Chemistry.

* Assist the Director in managing operational aspects of the facility.

* Perform scheduling and prioritizing of instrument usage. Provide routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments. Provide user training on all instruments.

* Consult with users on experimental design and data analysis. Develop and improve experimental protocols. Develop and implement NMR-based lab modules for undergraduate and graduate curricula. Work with information technology related tasks such as data archiving and system and network security.

* Provide service to the scientific community, University and General Public. Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals. Consult and collaborate with the research community. Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources. May participate in national and international meetings within the discipline.

* Mentor graduate students. May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

* Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education Required:

* Academic knowledge of a discipline plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply the knowledge that is generally associated with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent professional degree, i.e., M.D., D.D.S. or D.V.M.



Experience Required:

* 2-3 years of progressively responsible experience in NMR spectrometry and the conduct of engineering or physical science research is required.

* Working experience with WINDOWS and UNIX operating systems is required.

* 1-2 years of Post-Doctoral experience in NMR-related research in one or more fields of Chemistry or other related disciplines is required.

* Extensive experience in solid state NMR spectroscopy demonstrated with publications and or training is required.

* Extensive experience with NMR hardware and software; theoretical and experimental NMR spectroscopy experience is required.



Desired Qualifications:

* Working experience with web site development and maintenance is desired.

* Basic experience in providing customer service in a professional manner and the ability to work well with others is desired.
