I also was able to install Vnmrj 2.2C operating as a data station on
Fedora 9. Everything appears to work, but there are at least two
critical packages that need to be installed. (1) Lesstif (a replacement
for openmotif) needs be installed and a symbolic link from
/usr/lib/libXm.so.3 to libXm.so.2 needs to be made in /usr/lib. (2) If
using compiz or other fancy visual effects, then the version of jre
provided by vnmrj needs to be replaced with the latest version from
java.com or with the one provided by Fedora 9 (OpenJDK). The package
for OpenJDK is java-1.6.0-openjdk. The version from java.com installs
in /usr/java/latest and the one from OpenJDK installs in
/etc/alternatives/jre. After installing the package(s), I moved
/vnmr/jre to jre.bak and created the link /vnmr/jre pointing to
/usr/java/latest or to /etc/alternatives/jre, any of these work. I have
used jre 1.6 from java.com in a 400MR spectrometer (with redhat 4) and
it also works fine.

Apparently vnmrj requires tcl and tk 8.3 and refuses to work with newer
versions. The version provided by Fedora 9 is 8.5. Tcl/tk is used by
some ancient user interfaces, notably the color command of vnmrj and the
printers and accounting sections of vnmrj adm. I have not tried to
downgrade Tcl/tk on Fedora yet.

Also, when changing the IP address and name of the host computer on a
recently installed 400MR, we had to insert a line in /etc/hosts with the
new IP and name of the computer. Otherwise, when loading, vnmrj freezes
displaying something like "Initializing..." on the status bar.

I have also installed vnmrj 2.1B on Mandriva 2007. The important points
are to install openmotif and openmotif21 and downgrade the versions of
tcl and tk to 8.3.

Happy hacking,
