AMMRL members,
Thanks to all who responded to my question concerning
computer specs needed to support "Topspin" for off-line
processing. Please excuse me for just now submitting a
summary of responses to a question that I posed back in
April.
1. Of the twenty five who responded, almost all said that
they were very happy with the software. There were several
comments to the effect that "the 2.0 release had solved
several bugs present in the 1.3 release".
2. Roughly half of the respondents were using Windows rather
than Linux. Four or five were using both. All seem happy
with the version they are using, however there seems to be
some sense that Linux is better if the computer is to
actually be running the spectrometer. But for off-line
processing there doesn't seem to be a preference.
3. The Bruker minimum specs are:
3 GHz Processor
1 GB RAM
160 GB Memory
This seems to be the way to go.
4. Three of the respondents complained of "slowness" in the
software, but attributed this to inadequate RAM and cheaper
graphics cards. Based on this I would guess that to insure
speed you would want at least 1 GB RAM and a higher end 256
or 512 MB graphics card.
5. Several of the respondents also recommended increasing
the RAM to 2 GB.
6. Several respondents recommended a second "back up" hard
drive, and "maxing out" the memory.
Thanks to all. Your comments were very helpful to me.
Please note that I have left Tulane and New Orleans, and
am now working at The National Center for Natural Products
Research, in Oxford, Mississippi. It is green and beautiful
here, and I very much like working on Natural Products.
Very best regards to all.
