Thank you! Dee sent me three of his and I will try to cajole my
boss's staff to order 10 of these for me. Thank God for friends.
Jerry Hirschinger (probably misspelled) sent valuable info about
replacing TMC anti-vibe valves, so thanks to him as well.

Gary Lueker's advice about cooling fans was good, but I unfairly
attributed quality to brand name. It is now my opinion that the
crucial difference is ball-bearings versus sleeve-bearings. I repeat
my advice, though: clean your dust filters and fans often and, when
you must replace a fan, use a good ball-bearing fan and you probably
will retire the console before that one quits. I'd be interested in
hearing, off-list, from people who know Gary. I thought, and Varian
thought, too, that I was lucky to be in the service territory of
their best diagnostician. Unfortunately, service personnel nowadays
are spread too thin to be useful to anyone but facilities with
service contracts, warranties, or lots of money to pay the hourly rates.

Tomorrow at 3:00 PM, I will convene the first NMR users group meeting
in my 17+ years here. It has become obvious that when I write to our
current administration about NMR Facility needs, this is regarded as
"what Bill Stevens wants" without the slightest consideration that I
might just be trying to keep the facility alive and well for researchers' use.

So...after tomorrow, I will let the faculty write about what is best
for NMR. Even the untenured ones are harder to ignore than a mere
staffer like me, who, as a former faculty member here has said, are
considered "lower than bread mold" at SIU.
