A fascinating example of this (and they told just how they did it) can be found at http://www.jeolusa.com/nmr/mag_view/magnet_destruction.html.

Subject: AMMRL: Cutting a magnet in half.

Dear Colleagues

I am the ex-manager of a small MR facility at University of Sydney.

We are thinking of cutting in half a decommisioned Magnex (MRCA 400/52/SS) magnet for educational display.
Does anybody have experience of this procedure and any advice or warnings?

Thanks in advance,
Roger Bourne
