Re: [AMMRL] Real Natural Rubber Tubing

I have stopped using these foam insulation sleeves because the part of the
tubing inside the sleeve takes much too long to thaw.

Starting a fill on a second magnet with partially frozen tubing causes too
much strain and was my most frequent cause for shattered tubing, both rubber
and silicone. I now use exclusively silicone tubing (McMaster 51135K47).
They last for years.

Best Regards,

Jürgen

As a precaution against shrapnel from shattered tubing and splashes of nitrogen,
I use inexpensive foam rubber insulation designed for household plumbing wrapped
around the LN transfer tubing. Ask at your local hardware store or plumbing
supplier. Be aware that there are different kinds - the best one is soft,
flexible, with no seam (see the picture); another has a lengthwise seam to
be glued after fitting, another is thicker and less flexible (like a pool noodle).

I would just like to point out that silastic tubing can shatter with LN2.

There was a fellow at GE NMR that lost an eye filling LN2.

Stick with rubber…

You can order it from Fischer Scientific, Cat.No. 14-178-5F. It is only
12 feet long and costs $120!

You can also buy 50ft black latex tubing with the same specs from VWR for
$150. Part.No. 62995-721. I haven't used this one though. I have used
the amber variety, but its wall thickness is only 3/32" instead of 1/8"
and it feels a little too flimsy. It would be nice to hear from someone
who has used the black one...

I am looking to buy 50 ft of Natural Rubber tubing. I bought a 50 ft roll
15 years ago that was super expensive from a glassblower supply place. All
I am seeing now is cheap latex called natural for much too cheap. I've tried
the cheap stuff and it cracks quickly. I can use silicone but prefer natural
rubber if I can get it. Anyone know where I can get 50 ft of 3/8 in ID and
1/8 in wall real natural rubber tubing?
