We are in the process of revamping our NMR course (Molecular Structure
Determination) which was a 4 credit course of which 1 credit was a fairly
involved concurrent lab that I was responsible for. The lab involved
hands-on training in the various 1D and 2D NMR tools and applying them
toward the elucidation of a fairly complex unknown. The process ran the
length of the entire semester.
I'm wondering how many out there have a lab portion to a course similar to
this and how involved the NMR center is in the lab? I have found that the
semester-long contact with a large portion of incoming 1st or 2nd year
graduate students is invaluable and enables an important connection with
those future users of the NMR facility.
1) Does your NMR (interpretation) course have an associated lab component?
2) Is the lab part of the course or stand alone?
3) How involved is the lab?
4) As a facility manager, do you teach the lab component?
5) In lieu of a lab component to an NMR course, are you actively involved
in training research students the in's and outs of NMR experiments or is
that left to the research groups?
Please elaborate as much as you wish.
