VNMR-J

Dear AMMRL,
Last week I posted a query about VNMR-J:
"We would be very interested and grateful to hear from anyone who has
undertaken the VNMR to VNMR-J switch, and especially anyone who has
switched from Sun to Linux hosts."
Often a query to our wonderful group quickly generates 20-30 replies - but
in this case I only got 3 responses. Are so few people actually using VNMR-J?
Of the respondents one seems happy with VNMR-J, one uses the classic VNMR
interface, and another seems not favorably impressed. None of the
respondents is using a Linux host.
I would still be interested in hearing more from those using VNMR-J if
anyone else has the time to send me an email.

Here are the redacted responses:

We have an Inova 600 operating on Solaris 9 with VNMRJ1.1D. We still
use old VNMR interface because no one bothered to spend time learning
the VNMRJ, so cannot comment on how well VNMRJ works.

We are using vnmrj 1.1d under walkup (automation) mode, using a Sun Blade
150 as host.
If you are using the software with manual use, and have tested it
internally (so you already know a lot about what you are getting into),
then you are probably ok with making the change.
If you haven't looked at the software in detail, I recommend you do this
before making any switches to vnmrj. I pretty seriously dislike vnmrj,
even after working with it for more than 3 months. It is a _big_ change to
the interface, and my primary discomfort has to do with still not
understanding what is going on with many aspects of it. For example, I
have made some pretty simple changes in 6.1c to the NOESY1D experiment
here, and still have not figured out how to make these changes in
vnmrj. Most of my discomfort, however, I believe is involved with walkup
mode, so again, you may be ok with manual use. I did see the Linux version
working at Darmstadt in November; it seemed to work ok there, and was
_much_ faster than how it runs on our Blade 150. But I cannot comment
directly on how stable the software is on that platform.

I have switched four Inova consoles (circa 1996) over to
VNMR J 1.1D with Solaris 9 on new Sun Blade 1500s. The systems
work fine with one caveat. We have found that both VNMR 6.1C with
the 20X series of patches (which are a backport of changes
from VNMR J 1.1C) and the VNMR classic interface of both VNMR J
1.1C/1.1D suffer from a glitch where the console will go inactive.
This problem doesn't seem to arise under the VNMR J interface of
VNMR J 1.1C/1.1D
