.pdef file on Varian instruments

All,

Our Varian instruments had been having irregularities since the holiday
break. Our customized experiments were not working as they had been
programmed to, and sometimes the instrument just locked up. My partner in
crime, Bill Bartsch, found that our user maclib directories had been changed
based upon a file he found. The file was ".pdef"

This file activated January of 2001. What it did was move the customized
macros from filename to .filename, so Glide could no longer find our
customized experiment files. This led to Glide to use other pulse programs
from a higher directory, as well as other yet to be understood problems. We
do not know if this file came on the software(6.2b), or was put there
internally or externally. We have since fixed the problem, but were
wondering if anyone else has observed this phenomenon, or if anyone has this
".pdef" file. It resided in the user maclib directory.

Thanks,

Andrew J. Jensen
