Tape Drive Fatal Error

Happy New Year to all!

We have an Exabyte XL tapedrive to backup data from a Sparc5 workstation
(running Solaris 2.4), using SONY 112M 8mm cartridge tapes.
This hardware and tapes have been used succesfully in the past.
While trying to backup the hard disk, using ufsdump 0ucf /dev/rmt/0 /,
 I get the following error:

Error for command 'write'. Error level: Fatal
Requested block 16, Error block 16
Sense Key: Media Error
Vendor 'Exabyte'
ASC=0X3 (peripheral device write fault), ASCQ=0X2, FRU=0X0
DUMP: Write error 9 feet into tape 1

The only difference with the past is the replacement of an external hard
disk (crashed) with an active HD50 SCSI terminator.

Grateful for any suggestions or advice.
