Hi Beth,
I have used APC UPS's on Bruker NMR Systems at two different academic
facilities. They have worked well. I have also used 120V versions
separately on the PC's attached to the systems.
Both sites have had cryoprobes with compressors used for cooling and those
ran off of 3 phase AC power. Those compressors were not on UPS's due to
their high power draw (i.e. very expensive). If the AC power went down our
cryobays would go into emergency warm up mode.
Both sites also had generator backup systems with backed up panels in the
lab so we only needed the UPS systems to provide about 5-10 minutes of run
time to allow for the generators to reach a stable voltage.
I will warn you that the APC UPS's are set up to start frequent alarms once
the batteries reach what APC considers to be the end of usable life. I
think that set that at 3 years of use. On our 300 MHz system I have
disconnected the unit from the wall as a test and allowed the UPS to settle
in on the run time and it is still showing 40 minutes of run time. I ended
up disabling the alarms through the UPS's cconfiguration control.
In the past I have been able to rebuild battery packs using Interstate
batteries but these APC packs seem harder to disassemble. The battery
replacement packs from APC come to a pretty significant fraction of the
original UPS price.
You might want to be sure to evaluate the length of time in use before the
UPS starts to put out alarms for battery replacement and the cost of those
new battery modules.
