Thanks to Mike, Clemems and Walt for useful information.

The solution was to remove the apostrophe and spaces from the computer's
hostname, but this was more complex than expected.

This can, in theory, be changed in System Preferences --> Sharing -->
Computer Name

However, this made no difference to the name in the Terminal, or output
of hostname, even after a reboot.

Some Googling found a command that did work:

sudo scutil --set HostName newhostname

This did fully change the hostname, and TopSpin runs normally.

As this is under Catalina, I tried the suggested fix to access
data of running TopSpin from the Terminal command line, going to
/opt/topspin4.0.8 and typing ./topspin

This did not work in this case.

My usual solution is simply for users to set up a data directory in
/opt, like /opt/NMRdata, and this will load normally into TopSpin when
started from the icon.

best wishes,
