This may seem like a strange one but it has been bothering me for about
two years now and I finally decided to go to the oracle:
As an independent NMR laboratory we supported our instruments through a
combination of cheap ebay consoles and the excellent affordabl services
of Triangle Analytical and NMR Associates - so for many years (15 years
we had no budget for software upgrades and just ploughed along on the old
vnmr versions). For report writing we got into the habit of processing
all data on the Varian systems as I am very proficient at this. Up until
2011 we were on SunOS 1 or 2 (I think) and vnmr 4.3b - we would set up a
dummy print spool, the HP graphics plotter/LaserJet_300 files would dead
end in a spool in /usr/spool/varian3_PCA8 - we would FTP them across to
our windows PCs and then import into Coreldraw.
I would like to still be able to do that but cannot figure out where the
files go in the unix file structure when you set up a dummy spool in vnmr 6.1C.
If someone could tell me where to find them I would be forever in their
debt as right now I have to maintain a couple of old Sparc 5's with vnmr
4.3b as workstations in order to keep my old processing method alive as it
is a nice smooth, quick way of producing PDF data that has been vector
graphically annotated. The hard drives on the Sparc5 stations are starting
to sound like they want to self destruct so I'd like to figure this out
before I have to buy Sparc 5 workstations (they only cost a $100 but it
would be so much easier to avoid the FTP dance we currently have to play.
Of course MNova and ACD have nice packages for this now (I'm starting to get
quite good on the MNova platform), but when I really want to "crank" out a
bunch of spectra in the shortest amount of time my abilities developed over
the past 20 years lie more favorably in the Varian software at the moment
and the beatiful, s1/r1, s2/r2, s3/r3 commands and customizable print macros.
Also working on the spectra in Coreldraw is extremely easy for annotation.
All the Best, John
