AMMRL: good VT practices

Dear AMMRL-ers,

Some old habits seem to die particularly slowly in our NMR lab. For
decades, people in my lab have traditionally reserved a single day every
week for variable temperature (typically low temperature -80degC) in the
name of protecting the probe-head, lengthening its life expectancy and
minimizing the shimming work. The demands for VT are however quite high
now, and I was under the impression that the modern equipment can "take
it" and shimming doesn't seem to be a big problem nowadays. So I would
like to know what are the opinions out there and the general good
practices in terms of continually going up and down in temperature.
Also, I'd like to know if it is a widespread practice to "ramp" up and
down when setting a new temperature? Why and what is a proper rate?

I'm sorry this topic has ever been discussed before. Perhaps someone
could then point me to the thread?

best regards

Chris
