AMMRL: service fee survey for academic labs servicing external companies

Dear all,

A little background to my question: we have been running samples for NMR, MS and IR for some local biotech companies for a few years. For NMR measurement, we ask the scientists in the company to dissolve their compounds in solvent, put in a NMR tube and submit to us. The NMR facility personnel will run the NMR within the day, process the data including peak peaking and integration, and provide a hard copy of all the prints including detailed expanded regions for the scientists in the same day. The companies are within walking distance to our facility, so there is no shipping cost involved.

Previously most samples are for 1H only, and we run 13C or 31P every once in a while, roughly once in every 7~10 samples. So we make a flat rate of $50 per spectrum, whether it is 1H, 13C, or 31P. However, recently, the request for 13C and 31P grows substantially, perhaps for every 2~3 1H NMR, a 13C or 31P NMR is requested. This takes much more instrument time compared with what we have been doing. I am considering of differentiating the charges for 1H vs. 13C or 31P, for example, reduce 1H to $40 and change 13C or 31P to $100. Before I bring it for discussion with the companies, I want to see how this practice is being done in other academic facilities, for same day turn around service.

So for those who are doing such fee-for-service to outside companies, with same day or at latest 2nd day service run by facility personnel, I would like to know what your fee structures are and how it is received. I will only use what I received for evaluating the structure of our fee, without any disclose to any other people, unless I am told explicitly that I can share with other people who may request for summary.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Wei Li
