Is this for an INDY ?

If yes you can take any modern monitor, find the 3W15 to 15 pin cable
(Black Box is a good source) and you have to set the monitor type in the
boot monitor.

Boot the INDY, --> stop for maintenance --> system monitor

enter " setenv monitor high " and then reboot. Otherwise it goes into
1024x768 resolution.

Is this for an O2?
We replaced the SGI monitor on our O2 with a NEC Multisync LCD1850E 18"
from www.themonitoroutlet.com and are quite pleased with the result. No
special cable was needed.

Lots of multisync monitors will work with the newer SGI computers. I use
a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 87TXM with an O2 on a Bruker DPX-400. I also
use one of these with a Sun SPARC1 in a GE Omega console. I got these
because they had BNC connectors and various sync options, but they are no
longer made. Making the connections is usually an annoyance on the older
computers, but the newer ones seem to have the standard high density
DB-15 video connector. A company called L-com has lots of different
cables and adapters, as of course do other vendors.

Jim
I can't recollect SGI # of the monitor that died but
I replaced it with SONY Trinitron Multiscan 200ES
with no problem...correct plugs and all.

Jim,

Just a side note --- I don't think that Bruker is going to wait for them to
go out of business according to their latest nmr-software-news. Here it is
if you haven't seen the latest release:

Important note regarding the purchase of new computer systems for NMR
spectrometers.
We have decided to freeze our commitment towards SGI computers. We will not
support the O2+ computer system, neither as a computer driving an NMR
spectrometer, nor as a standalone workstation. We strongly recommend that
customers choose either a Windows 2000 or Linux (Red Hat 7.1) based PC
computer for all future spectrometer or workstation acquirements intended to
drive the Bruker NMR-Suite software package. Only in special cases we will
recommend buying an O2, but not an O2+, computer.
There are two good reasons for this decision. One is that the O2+ has a
problem that can lead to a complete halt of the computer system. (The O2
computer system has been discontinued by SGI.) The other is that future
software developments of the NMR-Suite will not be based on the IRIX
operating system. In order to allow everybody to benefit from these future
developments, we strongly recommend using the PC platform for newly acquired
computers.
The hardware configuration for PC's driving the NMR spectrometer has
undergone a thorough Bruker on-site test for long-term stability and optimum
performance. The software on these computers is factory installed and
tested. Therefore, we can only guarantee full spectrometer functionality
with such a Bruker supplied computer system.
On the other hand, workstations that are used for offline processing only
can be more freely chosen as they are not an integral part of the
spectrometer. Nevertheless, such systems require a certain minimum hardware
and software configuration, especially with respect to the graphics card and
the supported operating systems.
For all questions regarding the hardware and software configuration of the
PC's, please contact your local Bruker representative.
Of course, we will continue our software maintenance for all thus far
delivered SGI based spectrometers and workstations at their present feature
level.

This is rather disconcerting to me since we are presently having a new
console installed with a just purchased O2. I knew that Bruker was going to
eventually part from SGI but did not realize that it was going to be so soon
and so radical.

Unfortunately, this message is a little late for me. I talked with one of
Bruker's Apps people in Freemont and she said that there will be not NMR
Suites upgrades for IRIX.

Best Regards,
Kurt

Hi,
Does anyone know of a direct replacement for a SGI GDM-17E21 color
monitor.. I would like to replace it with something other than SGI. I
wonder how long they will be in business.

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure if this helps, but I just installed a new Octane and
substituted a Viewsonic professional series P225 21" monitor--this model
has the BNC connector panel for the RGB cable to port directly to the
Octane. Beautiful picture and higher refresh rates than some of the SGI's.
Just make sure your cable has the proper pin configuration to plug into
the SGI,

Cheers,
Joe

Jim Breeyear:

Silicon Graphics is a very old highly respected CGI content platform
producer. As long as there are movies & DARPA ... there will be a SGI.
They may be having troubles now but I would not wager the farm on them
dropping out of the Hi-end display and computer platform market ... they're
just too good. Also there is a whole world of SGI out there that you may
not be aware of because it is in DOD classified domain. Checkout the next
sigraph and see:)

If it's still serving you well then why bother?

Is this the kind with the VGA connector or the other sort? You can
replace the ones with the VGA with another hires monitor. You may be
able to get an adapter for the fancy connector from a place like
Warehouse.com. Look into adapters for KVM switches. I got a switch so
that I could hook up multiple computers to a single keyboard, monitor and
mouse. They listed adapters for SGI computers. I found though that I
could straight to the VGA port on an O2.
Good luck

Hi Jim:

We have had good luck with NANAO 17 in monitors, their
better than the Sony monitors SGI was
using the model we have used is the Flexscan 2-17 EX they probably
have a newer model now, but I would invest the extra money in a 17 or
18.1 flat panel monitor if you can afford it.

Monitor Mania at 800-228-3349 has replacement SGI monitors at a very
resonable price.

Hi all,
Just in case Bruker/SGI users missed this announcement I thought I'd
