Hi Jerry,

This largely depends on which preamp exactly you want to replace.
Do you have a “correct frequency” preamp of the same type available (even if it’s broken)?

- A X-BB preamp with exchangeable external filter unit should work at any frequency
- a highband/1H preamp will be very difficult because of internal filters
- the newer the preamp is (HPPR/HPPR2/3) the less likely it will work because the filters got more and more integrated into the board itself instead of being possibly swappable filters
- lock preamps might be doable but the filter units in the side need to be exchanged
- newer X band filters tend to have a built-in deuterium reject filter which may block desired frequencies (and you need to add an external lock reject filter for your lock frequency)

In German, we call this “Jein” (“yeahno”)… ;-)

Dear AMMRL,

Has anybody tried replacing a HPPR preamplifier with one for a different frequency? For example, replace a 500MHz preamplifier with a 400MHz or 600MHz one. I appreciate your inputs.

Cheers,
Jerry
