For those who might be wishing to operate Bruker and Varian instruments with
a single operating system: the OpenVnmrJ source code can be downloaded from
github and compiled in Alma 9. There were some hiccups with setting up for
compiling it (a routine called 'toolChain'), but Dan Iverson fixed those issues.
OpenVnmrJ is also Ubuntu 22 ready. I've been running one of my Varians with
it for a while now, and now that I've seen OpenVnmrJ with Alma 9 vs. Ubuntu 22,
I've decided to switch my other Varians to Ubuntu.
At the recent SMASH meeting in Baveno, I had an interesting discussion with
one of our colleagues, who is of the opinion that "there aren't any technical
reasons left to prefer Linux to Windows for running an NMR spectrometer."
This skirts some administrative reasons, for instance that using Linux may
allow you to have a moat between you and your local IT department. "Old habits
die hard" is also not a technical reason, but it's probably the main reason I'm
switching my Brukers to Alma 9.
One last point regarding OpenVnmrj, I wanted to mention that the Varian console
boot protocols do not present a security problem assuming you configure a firewall
so those services are blocked on the network interface connected to the outside
world, and only open on the network interface connected to the spectrometer.
