BACKGROUND
The C-CART NMR facility contains 3 high-field NMR instruments: a Bruker AVANCE 500 MHz equipped with a TXI solution probe, a Bruker AVANCE III 300 MHz equipped with a BBO probe and auto sampler, and a Bruker AVANCE II 600 MHz three-channel system equipped with a variety of solution, micro-imaging, and solid state probes. C-CART provides research support, training and chemical analysis services to undergraduate and graduate students, university researchers, government agencies, and private sector R&D companies. The instruments in C-CART are grouped into four service areas: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-Ray Crystallography (XRD), Mass Spectrometry, and Materials Characterization.
DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager of Operations for the CREAIT Network, the successful applicant will perform professional and technical work in a research support capacity involving the day-to-day operation of the NMR facility. Duties include training and oversight of students and other users in a multi-user research facility; scheduling and assisting users with the design, implementation and interpretation of experiments; maintaining the instruments at optimal performance levels by shim optimization and pulse sequence programming, calibration, and optimization; cryogen transfers; troubleshooting and repair of consoles and probes; data acquisition and processing; reviewing submitted manuscripts and research proposals; advising and assisting in grant preparations to secure funds for purchases of new and replacement instrumentation; implementing safety and standard operating procedures; maintaining familiarity with recent developments in NMR spectroscopy; preparation of specialized NMR samples; tracking instrument usage and managing the user accounts database; and other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (3-5 years) in NMR-related research. Completion of a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a relevant discipline; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Extensive and demonstrable expertise in solid state NMR, installation of probes, regular maintenance and operation of Bruker NMR instruments and software as well as theoretical and experimental NMR knowledge are required. Experience in micro-imaging NMR and ParaVision software; teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses; familiarity with RF, analogue and digital electronics, and computer programming; managing an open-access multi-user NMR facility; user account management in a Windows Active Directory environment; and operating, troubleshooting and maintaining Windows and Red Hat operating systems would be assets.
SALARY $69,055 - $89,514 per annum (Management and Professional)
