gradient shimming and Z1

Dear Spinlanders,

I am running samples in 3mm Wilmad tubes in d2o on a 500 MHz Varian cold
probe. I can get beautiful line shape and z-gradient maps with the
standard 3mm doped d2o sample. When I tried to do gradient shimming on
actual samples, I noticed that I always need to readjust Z1 (usually by
increasing Z1) to get better line shape. Both the standard doped d2o
sample and my experimental samples are at room temperature and thus I don't
think I have a temperature gradient problem - or do I. Can someone point
out what is going on. Your help is much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Que Van
