        Dear AMMRL members,

We have two openings for postdoctoral fellows in our lab in
Baltimore and one in our collaborator's lab in New York City to fill
immediately. We would appreciate if you could show the following
advertisements to any interested candidates.

                Best regards,

                        Ken Fishbein

NIH POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE
CARTILAGE MRI

Postdoctoral positions are available for work in the Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance Unit (Richard Spencer, Chief) of the National
Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health, located in
Baltimore, Maryland. The work will center on spectroscopic and
imaging studies of cartilage tissue derived from tissue engineering
protocols and from animal studies. Other research opportunities may
be available depending on the interests and background of the
successful candidate.
        NMR instrumentation consists of a triple-resonance wide-bore
Bruker DMX 400 Avance system with microimaging and solids capability,
and a double-resonance Bruker ABX 1.9T/31 cm Biospec with shielded
gradients. A Bruker 7T/30 cm DBX is on order and should be fully
operational by February, 2003.
A background in NMR spectroscopy or imaging of connective
tissue is preferred, although applicants with expertise in cartilage
biology who have the desire to learn NMR techniques are also strongly
encouraged to apply. We also invite applications from individuals
with experience in other areas of biological NMR. The appointment
will be as an IRTA Postdoctoral Fellow for US citizens, or as a
Visiting Fellow for US non-citizens. Accordingly, applicants must
have fewer than five years of postdoctoral experience.
Interested individuals should send or e-mail their CV and the
names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of at least three
references to: Dr. Richard Spencer, NMR Unit, NIH/NIA, GRC 4D-08,
5600 Nathan Shock Drive, Baltimore, MD 21224; Tel. 410-558-8226;

Project Description: The goal of our studies is to develop infrared
fiber optic spectroscopic techniques to evaluate cartilage pathology
in a clinical environment. This will be accomplished by the use of
chemometric analyses in pre-clinical and clinical models coupled with
validation by magnetic resonance and FTIR imaging techniques.

Requirements: Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. or M.D. with
experience in spectroscopy, biophysics or bioengineering, although
applicants experienced with cartilage biology will be considered.
