Hello again,
Thank you all for your astute and invaluable advice. After following your suggestions,
we doggedly traced this phantom to its ultimate cause, and found a resolution. After
tracing the power discontinuity all the way from the PSMI and PSMIII power supplies
through the HPPR/2 preampstack-and finding nothing wrong-we finally started removing
connectors from the back of the HPPR cover module (Rf cables, etc.), and found that
disconnecting the PICS cable solved the issue. The PICS cable had remained the problem,
even when the TXI probe it normally connects to was changed out for our older QNP probe.
Just the loose cable, plugged into the HPPR/2 cover module, causes the -19V indicator
light on the PSMIII power supply to go out. Removing the cable restored full functionality
to the instrument, solving both the lock and wobb problems.
Attempts at repairing this cable have so far failed. Attaching a standard ethernet cable
end to the HPPR has no adverse effect on instrument function. We think we may be able to
build a new cable, or source one at reasonable cost, but if you have an extra that would
help as well.
It is labeled 500MHz Z14361 ECL00 PH-PICS. =
