Hello Karel,

The consumption of liquid nitrogen by the Prodigy cryoprobe system will deg=
rade slowly over time. This is due to the fact that the transfer line is a=
lways in use, transferring cold nitrogen gas to the cryoprobe. It is norma=
l to have the transfer line pumped down every 20,000 hours (about 27 months=
) when you have your regular 20,000 hour maintenance. After that service, =
you will see the system is "good as new" and the consumption will once agai=
n be greatly reduced.

To answer your specific questions:

What is the boil off rate for the Prodigy dewar ?
The Prodigy Dewar sits on a scale so that we can keep track of the mass of
liquid nitrogen in the Dewar. When full, we have about 79 kg. Typically,
after about a week we are down to about 30 kg. As I said before, you will
consume more on a weekly basis over time, but we have never seen the mass
get too low. In other words, I am confident that you could go 9-10 days
without too much trouble, but you could not go two weeks.

How often do you refill the dewar?
We refill the Prodigy Dewar every week. We fill many of the magnets weekly,
so it makes sense to fill the Prodigy on the same schedule.

Is weekly refilling recommended or can it go longer ?
I have already answered this above. But what I will add is that if you are
in a pinch (liquid nitrogen delivery is delayed, staff are sick or other
issues), you can certainly go an couple extra days, But this should be the
exception.

One last thing I will add: we have had a BBO Prodigy cryoprobe for about
five years now, and it has so far been performing marvellously.
For us, it is the workhorse probe that goes through the most numbers of
samples, and can do most of the general purpose experiments. When people
need to do specialized experiments, or want to do VT-NMR, then we direct
them to another spectrometer.

Cheers,

Bob.

Dear all,

Some questions on the Prodigy probe:

What is the boil off rate for the Prodigy dewar ?

How often do you refill the dewar ?

Is weekly refilling recommended or can it go longer ?

Many thanks, will post a summary in due course.
