Re: [AMMRL] AMMRL: What to do with old magnets?

Hi,

I had quite good success using a plasma cutter (available for quite cheap at
DIY stores - needs an air compressor as well) to cut out the magnet coil (to
use as display item for the original customer) and to separate out the aluminium
from stainless and copper parts. However it's a good day's work, so don't expect
a lot of money from the process. But it's good to know it will all go to proper
metal recycling.

I don't think the coil material is really recyclable though as it's a wild
material mix of copper (wire), niobium-titanium (supercon), stainless (over
binder) and aluminium (formers), tin (joints) as well as resin, plastic etc

I haven't tried cutting it open with an angle grinder and cutter disks after
heariing it's not that funny… But that's the better way if you want a
"full display" piece by cutting a hole into every layer. People have done amazing
jobs at this, adding some LED lighting to show the different dewars 8-)

Cheers
Bert
