problems maybe solved

Dear group:

After I sent my announcement that I was giving up and putting the old Ultra
5 back on my Inova 500, mail arrived from Dennis Edwards at Utah, telling
me the problem with makeuser was that it didn't know about Solaris 9 and to:

change the line in makeuser as follows:

      5.7 | 5.8 )
            file=dt2.tar
to:
      5.7 | 5.8 | 5.9 )
            file=dt2.tar

This I did and makeuser now succeeds nicely. He also cautioned that setacq
would misbehave, so I took a look and, sure enough, no way the script was
going to find the first ethernet interface called eri0 and second interface
called hme0 (why does Sun *do* that???).

I edited setacq and the Blade 150 and the console now appear to get along
nicely running patched Solaris 9 and unpatched VNMR 6.1C

It would have been nice to just apply the big 6.1C patch, but the main user
group said even recompiling their pulse sequences did not make them work.
This must be fixable but the group leader and his unix guy are out of town
and I needed to go this way as a stopgap measure.

I do think it will be most appropriate to go to the "patched VNMR 6.1C"
environment with all the protein pulse sequences recompiled to be
compatible because that compatibility will ease our eventual transition to
VNMRJ.

Thanks for all the individual efforts. Dennis Edwards' advice penetrated my
skull and got me going the right way. I think.

Bill
