Okay, I'm exhausted, out of solutions, off warranty, and pissing my
vacation away trying to replace an Ultra 5 with a Blade 150 on an Inova 500.

If you're behind a firewall, you have to tell the Solaris install some lies
and then go back and configure nsswitch.conf and resolv.conf and all that.
I know that and am used to it.

The on-hard-disk installer was a disaster and I had to reload Sol 9 from
CD, then apply 9_Recommended.zip - I got 8 patch install failures and when
I rebooted I got several lines of

WARNING: add_spec: No major number for mpt

Trying to install VNMR 6.1C, I find that vnmr1 is UID 72 as should be but
has no home directory. Creating /export/home/vnmr1 and chown vnmr1:nmr
vnmr1 and knowing that most of the dot files are not there, I did
/vnmr/bin/makeuser vnmr1 and was told

tar: /vnmr/user_templates/XTerm: No such file or directory
./makeuser: .dt/: does not exist

Looking at /vnmr/user_templates/ I see that dt.tar and dt2.tar have not
been extracted, so I extract them and try makeuser again. No luck for
making any user.

My Solaris 9 media are 12/02 version, but I would think the patch cluster
would bring the OS up to date. My VNMR 6.1C media are pn# 01-907939-00,
year 2000.

I'm about to put the U5 back in place unless someone can tell me where I'm
messing up or whether I can't begin this process with the media I have.

Sigh...BIG sigh...I've been busting hump trying to carve out some vacation
time before we install a new Inova 300 and Mercury 400. Nervous breakdown
looming.
