internal charges for NMR facilities

Dear all,

Due to financial restraints, the powers that be at UCI are interested
in raising money from NMR user fees beyond the current aim of
recovery of running costs. This is likely to include part funding of
the departmental electronics facility, which I use heavily for
instrument repairs, and could also include partial payments for
instrumentation which would then be depreciated over a number of
years. At the moment salary funding is not being proposed.

I would be very grateful if other managers of NMR facilities at major
publicly funded research universities could let me have an idea of
their recharge rates and how they are applied. For example, here at
UCI we have hourly rates for all instruments, increasing with
magnetic field, and with peak and off-peak prices.

I will treat all responses confidentially, but it will be very useful
to know if our current charges are high, low or average compared to
other institutions.

Thanks in advance,

Phil.
