I have received several useful responses about dealing with
construction near magnets, most of them suggesting building a box
around the magnet. We may do something like that for the instruments
that will remain behind in any case. My main concern is a little
different. How close to magnets can you get large moving equipment
before you threaten damage to the magnet, probably by movement
within the dewar?
My lab is below ground, with pedestrian mall above it. The second
stage of construction I'll be dealing with is the removal of several
feet of material directly above my lab, down to the top of the
building (my ceiling), followed by the reconstruction of the area
with layers (feet!) of various materials to seal against moisture.
They will use heavy equipment, which is likely to come occasionally
within the 5 G line of our large magnets. Nothing from outside is
going to get inside, but the equipment that gets "close" will be
much larger than what is used in renovations indoors.
So, am I worrying unnecessarily?
