Re: [AMMRL] Quench narrowly avoided? Filling small magnets connected to helium recovery

I have to say I'm quite enjoying the pictures of everybody's recovery systems.

I have two more thoughts regarding Luke's system:

From the pictures, it looks to me like the exhaust from the fill side is just
permanently closed.  That makes me a bit uncomfortable.  It's one of
those things that I think is probably fine, but it looks weird to me. I think
the ideal situation would be to tee it in to the exhaust somehow so that the
magnet can vent through both sides.  Or I believe somebody mentioned that
a better helium manifold might be available.  Though I would expect the
fill side to ice up if there were any issue, rather than the exhaust side, they
do have 2 exhaust ports for a reason...

And upon re-reading your initial email I see that you had this happen on two magnets.
One thing I had to learn was to properly depressurize the supply dewar after a fill--this
helped prevent something like this from happening.  If you vent the supply dewar
down almost completely after a fill it should reduce whatever comes out through the
fill port when you pull out the stinger.  The other thing that I would be curious
about--are you using the same transfer line on both magnets?  Is it possible that
your transfer line has gone soft?  Or is going soft?  If your fill is less
efficient than normal I could see that causing issues with pressure building up in the
magnet.  And could possibly cause the helium sensor to behave as described below?

Maybe?

Cheers,Mike
