issue with Varian automation software after workstation/OS upgrade

Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded the workstation on our INOVA400. I am having the following issue with the automation software:
Everything works fine as long as there are samples in the queue. If the queue finishes (ie all samples have been
analyzed) and there is an idle period, the queue will not restart with the submission of another sample. The newly
submitted sample is listed in the status window as queued, but automation will not begin. An su acqproc cycle
and autora will usually get the queue running again (but not always). I have given the gory details below
and thanks in advance for any suggestions. I can post a summary of the fix once the problem is resolved, so
feel free to reply directly to me rather than the entire group.

Details:

Old system
Ultra 5
Solaris 8
VNMR 6.1C ("106" patch level)
SMS robot and automation software were running great.

New system
Blade 1000 (two 750 MHz processors)
X2222A (dual scsi, dual enternet) board
Solaris 9 (all recommended and security patches applied)
VNMR6.1C (current patches applied)

The system has an SMS robot for automation. The behavior described above
occurs with
1) a new install of the VNMR software (no customizations at all)
2) either the primary or secondary ethernet board connected to the console. I have run extensively in
both configurations.

The only other anomalies that I can identify are:

1) installation of VNMR appears to have killed the Solaris Management Console server (the SMC GUI thinks
that there is no server running, even when I start or stop the deamon manually - this may not be related, but it was working
before VNMR was installed.

2) looking at the results of the ipcs command, the messages are owner=root group=nmr
On my other spectrometer and the old Ultra 5, the messages are owner=root group=root

3) when the a sample is submitted after an idle period, of all the "proc" processes, it is Autoproc that does
not start up again.

I currently believe that these last two points are the most significant.

Thanks again.
