Dear Colleagues:

The quantity of replies and long length of so many of them shows me
that my words "resonated" with many of you. It will be difficult to
make a summary, but I will try to do a good job of it before ENC
which, unfortunately, I can't attend this year.

I will say that the commentary seems to be 100% in sympathy and
agreement with me. Most gratifying, however, is to receive a reply
from a student who had to endure one of my arm-waving lectures, Jim
Simpson. This really made me feel great:

Hey Dr. Stevens,

Well as a former student who endured your "arm-waving vector
explanation" I can certainly say that is has stuck with me as my root
understanding of NMR theory. I can still recall standing in that small
room getting my first taste of NMR. So for me (being someone who is
interested in NMR beyond a means to obtaining data), your introductory
class was excellent. Unfortunately, I have found that those who are
unfamiliar with NMR don't realize that an understanding of the theory is
directly tied to successfully running the instrument.
