Respondents to my question fell into two categories: those unhappy folks
who, like me, had been hacked and recognized these symptoms, and the lucky
(or more secure) ones who had not. The problem cannot be fixed by typing
the su password, or rebooting the computer. The operating system is not
functioning properly, and the most likely reason is a hacker has altered
it. We reinstalled the operating system, and are studying ways to improve
our currently poor security.
Thanks for your responses, particularly to Rolf Kyburz who sent a lot of
info I still need to study thoroughly.
