Locked out on Sun and not a happy camper

AMMRL,
  For the second time, I have encountered a problem with Solaris 8 where
when the screen locks, the user cannot unlock it by entering the correct
password. The first time I cured the problem by reinstalling the operating
system. Does anyone recognize this problem and know how to fix it other
than by reinstalling? Many thanks for any help.
