since years I am looking for a good solution to perform
remote spectrometer management.
Technical base
DMX spectrometers
XWINNMR
IRIX 6.5
In principle the remote management is possible using a remote
X server, i.e. eXceed. This works well.
Unfortunately there are a few significant problems:
a) you must keep the remote X server running for the complete
measurement
b) sometimes you have to pass firewalls
As a second solution maybe VNC is suited for remote management.
Thanks to Guenther Schmidt a compiled binary is available
(compilation of the sources is not too easy .... ).
But there seem to be the same problems as described above.
Until now I wasn't able to find the communication port between
VNC server and VNC client to configure the firewall.
Furthermore even here it seems to be impossible to close
the client.
For weekend measurements it would be fine to have a look
to running experiments and maybe to modify them. Maybe you
have good ideas, what's to do best.
